| [Scene opens on the Paradise stage, which is filled with girls auditioning for Faust, along with Philbin, a band, and a few other people. Phoenix is second in line behind another girl who is currently auditioning.] | |

| [Camera pulls back into the balcony to show Swan's face. He looks to his right questioningly and the Phantom's hand shows on camera wagging a negative finger.] | |
| Girl : | [Singing
off-key.] Thought I loved you but I don't...... |
| Swan : | [Into
a microphone] Next. |
| [The girl is led away and Phoenix comes up next, up to Philbin at his little table.] | |
| Philbin : | All right, what's your name, sweetheart? |
| Phoenix : | Phoenix. |
| [The Phantom puts his hand on Swan's shoulder at hearing Phoenix's name.] | |
| Philbin : | Fine, let's see what you got, Phoenix. |
| Phoenix : | Do I get to sing this time? |
| Philbin : | Oh, you mean you're really a singer? |
| Phoenix : | Yes, I'm a singer... |
| Philbin : | Well, try to forget it. We're not looking for singers, we're looking for screamers. |
| Phoenix : | I'm not a screamer, I'm a singer! |
| [Phoenix starts to walk offstage but Swan calls to her using his microphone. She turns to look at him when he calls her name, though she cannot see him in the darkened balcony.] | |
| Swan : | Phoenix. Swan here. [Camera switches to a shot of the dark balcony.] I want you to answer a question for me. |
| Phoenix : | [Off
camera] Yes? |
| Swan : | What would you give me to sing? |
| [The camera zooms in on the balcony, on two points of light shining off something, presumably the Phantom's mask. The camera switches back to looking at Phoenix.] | |
| Phoenix : | Anything you wanted. |
| Swan : | Anything? Would you give me.. your voice? |
| Phoenix : | Try me. |
| [The band starts to play. Phoenix is given a microphone and dances around on the stage, to the music. She throws her hat on the floor behind her.] | |

| [Phoenix finishes singing, dances off stage, then comes running back on to find out how she did. She looks at the balcony but notices Swan is gone. Looking dejected, she starts walking away.] | |
