2. Run vconfig to specify which game you're working on.
3. Add -game <path> on the command line where <path> is the directory that gameinfo.txt is in.

And try compiling using that instead. You need the manually set the game up in there so that might have a better chance to work for you.
When you start it up, in the area called "Target Mod or GameInfo Path", hit the Add button and browse to your l4d gameinfo.txt. SDK version should be set to Episode 1 I believe. Then just hit File, load your qc file and hopefully that will work. If it doesn't, check the output to see where it went wrong.

TWO copies of the vtx file and rename the endings to .dx90.vtx and
.dx80.vtx (for example, survivor_namvet.dx90.vtx and
survivor_namvet.dx80.vtx).
